Alternative Treatments for ADD

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a major problem in this country and many of the parents coming into Nutrition Stop are looking for alternatives to drug treatments.  Children suffering from symptoms of dyslexia and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder may find it easier to concentrate if their diets are supplemented with fatty acids, according to recent research.  The supplement used in the study, which involved 41 boys and girls ages 8 to 12, contained EPA and DHA derived from fish oil and GLA with linoleic acid derived from evening primrose oil.  The study reinforces the assertion that in some children, learning difficulties and ADHD-related symptoms are responsive to dietary supplements, according to the researchers.  Oily fish consumption has also been linked to increased IQ scores and improved vision.
