Colds are caused by a class of viruses called rhinovirus: these viruses mutate rapidly and there will always be opportunity for children and adults to catch colds. Flu is also caused by a virus - recurring or new strains of influenza. There are no cures for the common cold or for the flu; antibiotics, the popular treatment often demanded by patients catered to by physicians, are useless because the work only against bacteria. The best way to treat colds or flu is to prevent them in the first place.

It's a germy world out there, but there are some steps you and your family can take to protect yourselves from being infected with the latest virus circulating around your home, office, or school.

Wash your hands frequently, especially if you happen to shake a lot of hands or are in contact with many people at the office, school, etc. Make sure to lather with soap for at least 20-30 seconds.
Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth - this is how most colds are caught.
Maintain moist mucous membranes which physically block the entrance of viral invaders by drinking plenty of water and using a humidifier in cold, dry weather.
Sleep a good, deep sleep at least six to eight hours a night.
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables (those foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that your immune system needs).
Limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine, and sugar.
Exercise regularly.
