Garlic May Help Fight Heart Attacks Aged garlic extract may lower homocysteine levels in the blood, which is considered a major risk factor for heart attacks, according to a Research & Education Institute (REI) study. The year-long, double-blind study involved 19 cancer patients, of which nine were given regular doses of aged garlic extract and 10 received a placebo. In addition to lower blood homocysteine levels, patients taking garlic extract showed a tendency toward reduced LDL (bad) and increased HDL (good) cholesterol. The REI concluded that garlic extract can be an excellent dietary addition for people with a high cardiovascular risk or those who have undergone heart surgery. |
