Iron Can Boost Concentration In Younger Women

Younger women who suffer from poor memory and concentration may find an improvement of their mental performance with the supplementation of iron, according to a team of researchers at Penn State University.  In a study involving women ages 18-35, researchers found that supplementing with iron improved the test scores of subjects who were iron-deficient or anemic.  Prior to supplementation, these subjects performed worse on memory and concentration tests than iron-sufficient women.  "We were able to bring it right back to normal, back to the level of the iron-sufficient women," Laura Murray-Kolb, a Penn State nutritional researcher, told the Associated Press.  The researchers presented their findings at an American Society of Nutritional Sciences conference in April.
